Freedom, Apple and the Brilliance of Steve Jobs

Over the last five years it has been easy for me to disdain Steve Jobs and Apple, Inc. The Fanboys are the worst, nearly worshiping the man, the products and stuff. Jobs minimalist aesthetics bordered on the inhuman, however sleek they were. The Apple Stores with the “Genius Bars” were condescending temples of consumerism. This is a nice satire: I like that I can open my own computer, swap out parts if necessary, upgrade it myself and tinker. I like that freedom, even if sometimes parts don’t work and my “user experience” falters. But you can’t deny how influential Jobs was. He was a true inventor and innovator who changed the world. Others invented the personal computer. Jobs invented the mouse and the ability to move it and click on things on … Read entire article »

Grandma was in Color Too

It is always somehow jarring to see images from so long ago in full color. Somehow we imagine that everything was in black and white back then. Here’s one of the earliest color films you will ever see, over ten years before Wizard of Oz. (Gizmodo) … Read entire article »

I think I Lost Something

Just now finishing up migrating the blog to the new host: Bluehost.com. So far, so good…except for a nightmare of a time with some of the database files here for WordPress. Long story short, I lost a few of my most recent posts…and the blog header. Ach so. But it’s so much faster here now. … Read entire article »

All Fixed Now

Thanks to the friendly people at my hosting site, I was able to fix the problems with blog. I won’t go into the nitty-gritty details here, but let’s just say it was a rogue .htaccess file and some unruly permalinks. If that makes sense to you, then you probably know more than I do. If you have links to any particular webpage of mine that you know of, you may want to double-check that and make sure it still links to the proper page. Thanks, Your Friendly Neighborhood Blog Admin Guy … Read entire article »

Things I Do to Stay out of Trouble

Apparently my Easter sabbatical needs to be over. A couple of people I had no idea read this asked me what was happening here and when I would post again. I guess I have six readers instead of the four I thought I had. But their remarks got me thinking about the blog. It’s gone through quite a few changes since I started it. From obscurity to almost-obscurity, from WordPress to Blogger and back to WordPress–and back to being a pretty quiet corner on the ‘net. For a time I was working hard to make it more popular, and it worked when I posted controversial things, but I found it juvenile to chase ratings and hits, so I stopped. Readers left, too. Ce la vie. So where is it going now? What … Read entire article »

Thoughts on Going Tech

During discussion of Romans 5 and the contrast between the First Adam and the Second Adam, one of the members was blown away at the “design” of our salvation. It’s typology, and she was impressed. The discussion continued and I thought of the perfect analogy of God’s “Deep Magic” as C.S. Lewis would call it: the fractal zoom. Here’s what I am talking about (the video goes on for 9 minutes, but you need to watch at least 3-4 minutes to appreciate what is happening): Mandelbrot Fractal Set Trip To e214 HD from teamfresh on Vimeo. I mentioned this and received blank stares. Fair enough. But I wanted desperately to show the class a portion of this. Kind of impossible to do with a chalk board. And I couldn’t explain it in … Read entire article »

Boring Computer Hardware Post

I’m through with Dell Computers. This time it’s the power supply. Our home computer has taken to shutting down suddenly and without notice every so often. That computer runs Ubuntu most of the time, so it doesn’t freak out about “not shutting down correctly”, but it’s annoying and could eventually cause some data loss. No big deal, right? Just replace the power supply. Amazon and Newegg and, well, every place besides Staples has good deals on power supplies. Just four screws hold it in. Unless you have a Dell. They use proprietary power supplies which either: 1)Has connections which fit but subversively supply different voltages than the standard connections, potentially destroying your components; or 2) Use an additional connection to the motherboard, which if missing, will not allow the computer to work. So your options … Read entire article »
