A Semi-Return
I’m trying to get back to more regular blogging again. The remodel continues, but is finally shaping up. Dad is leaving tomorrow leaving us with plenty more to do–but all of it we can handle on our own. It will still be some weeks of nightly staining and finishing doors and drawer fronts, installing hinges, finishing walls, installing trim and kickboards and such. And the floors. The floors. So our traditional Christmas Open House will be an Epiphany Season open house…hopefully. It has been a real blessing to have Dad and Mother here for the last two weeks, working their tails off for us–especially this last week or so while I’ve been at the hospital and funeral and meetings and emergency calls and many other church obligations. They and Marjorie have … Read entire article »

Checking In
Feasting, renovating, preaching, visiting, studying, translating, preparing, praying. Fathering, husbanding, building, destroying. Changes are being made. Finishing a novel was not one of them, alas. I finished one last year in November. Have 30000 words of another, and 32000 of this one started November 1, but it wasn’t possible to finish. I have learned, now that I’ve written 110000 words of novel-length fiction what I’m getting better at and what still needs remedial practice. It will get better. It is a lot of fun, especially when the words come and the images are there and I get in the character’s heads and they start doing funky things that I didn’t know they would do. The kitchen is progressing, though everything takes longer than it should. Such is life. It will be good … Read entire article »

Luther, Lutheranism, Lutherans and So On
I’ve got a lot of semi-connected thoughts about denomination (doctrinal) loyalty and commitment and can’t quite string them together yet…or not without getting a little too specific for a publicly read blog. Since this is a blog and just a step above Jack Chick tracts, I can post about not having anything to post. I guess it’s a good thing you have low standards, or you wouldn’t be reading here anyway, I suppose. … Read entire article »

Trying Something New
Twitter Tools for WordPress wasn’t working well for me, apparently. Not sure what was going wrong, but it wasn’t behaving, then wouldn’t verify my login details. So I’m trying another tool to update Twitter and Facebook including short URLs so that you can link back here from there and so forth and so on. … Read entire article »

Social Media
I thought I had this blog linked up well with Facebook and Twitter, but as it turns out, the links to these blog posts aren’t coming through. Hmmm. I made some changes last night and hopefully I’ve got it set up right. If this post doesn’t make a link over at Facebook or Twitter, then I may need some tech assistance from someone who knows what’s what. You can contact me via the “contact” page on the menu bar above. Thanks! … Read entire article »
Back from Vacation
Thanks to everyone who posted their thoughts on the previous post. I was unable to keep up this last week–but had a great time at my sister’s house. I’ll post a brief recap later, and after that, my reactions to the video…though BT Ball’s comment may be hard to beat. … Read entire article »

All Time-Low
I knew Sunday was a rough day. It started out well-enough: a good seven hours of rest and made it to church a little earlier than usual. The sermon run-through went fine, and the rest of the preparations went well. But then the pre-service announcements came. I bumbled through them, tried to thank some VBS volunteers and forgot four people’s names. Totally blank. Thankfully, they are all good-humored people, and apart from some teasing about senior-moments after the service, no harm was done. The rest of the day went well-enough, but I was still flustered by forgetting people’s names earlier. Bible study was interesting. We got sidetracked with a discussion of depression and mental illness. I gave them some good theology, but also gave some personal, weird-o opinions. I made sure … Read entire article »

Blog Additions Coming Up
I’m planning an expansion of this blog to include more tricks, tips, and how-tos for Ubuntu, as well as Linux, Opensource and tech news. I’m not sure how to implement it exactly without conflicting with the general character and readership of the blog. For now, I’m simply posting them in the appropriate category. I may do a re-design to make the categories more apparent, or make a page linking to a whole ‘nother blog. If you’re interested in freedom from the MicroApple computing monopolies and want a killer operating system that is lightening fast even on old hardware, check out Ubuntu. It just works…. Though for those who are scared of typing a command or two may want to pay your Windows tax or your Mac Coolness Fee and stick with … Read entire article »

For Bloggers and DYI Webmasters
I was talking with Pr. Eric Brown this morning and he mentioned he used Yahoo Hosting. I thought I would share with you what I shared with him (plus some). Yahoo Hosting was a great way for me to start with the Church’s web page. It had a clean interface, basic tools and a nice glossary. But the admin is linked to a Yahoo account, meaning I “owned” the church website, something I didn’t really want. Adding users, password protecting pages, adding .htaccess files (used by WordPress and its plugins a lot) and many other things were difficult or impossible under their terms. I honestly wonder how much they support it too, since not much has changed with the hosting plans and tools in years. Even their automatic WordPress installation is … Read entire article »

Can’t…Find…Blog…Idea…
Ugh. Writer’s block. Having trouble working on the sermon for next Sunday. Having trouble posting here. So when a writer’s got block, what does he write about? You guessed it! A few reasons for writer’s block: Lack of inspiration. Inadequacy to complete the project Depression Distraction Illness Fear Of these, the second and last are the most damaging. Freewriting exercises can overcome the first issue. Anything from prayer to push-ups to Prozac can cure number three. Distraction is serious, but you can train yourself out of it. Illnesses pass, or don’t. If the latter, writing may be the least of your worries. But if you have block because you’re in over your head, it can quickly kill a project. Example: please provide a thirty-page outline for a fantasy epic that embraces Zen Buddhism with Norse mythology. Make it compelling and … Read entire article »
