The Spirit of Christmas from a Four-year-old
On my day off yesterday I had to go to Walmart. Jack got all excited about spending some of his allowance money on some Star Wars men. I explained to him that this time of year he should spend his money on presents, not on himself. I suggested buying something for Mommy, and finally he decided that yes, he would buy a present. But he wanted to buy a present for Mikayla…maybe a Star Wars mens that he didn’t already have? And maybe he would play with it? Getting frustrated, I mumbled, “Buying presents for someone that you want to play with is not the Christmas spirit.” A few minutes later Jack calls up from the backseat, “Dad, if I buy Mikki a Star Wars mens and then she shares with me. Dad, … Read entire article »

VBS: It’s what It Is
Some pastors despair over Vacation Bible School. They look at the lessons being offered and see very shallow re-tellings of the Biblical accounts, the cute crafts that don’t seem to mean much, the songs that are simplistic and seem completely opposite of what we sing on Sundays and wonder what we are doing with the kids. VBS runs much smoother when expectations are lowered. When your priorities are giving the children a safe environment, sharing the love of Christ with them in word and example, introducing them to stories from Scripture and telling them the Good News of Jesus Christ, and giving the children a few hours of fun at church, VBS works. The objection to this is that if you make it fun and give them good experiences, children will … Read entire article »

Being Mr. Mom
Marjorie and the eldest were away for the National Youth Gathering for six days. Six days with three kids at home, Sunday Worship and a large funeral. We had swimming lessons and trips to the store, swimming for fun and more trips to the store. And cleaning, cleaning, straightening up and dishes! Dishes galore! We also bought three kinds of chocolate cereal at the store. They liked that. Getting the lawn mowed was not easy. I had to pick a time I knew they would not be going at each other’s throats nor eating all the chocolate cereal while I was distracted outside. I didn’t do laundry, nor did I wash the floors. We swept them, and the Household Elves showed upĀ yesterday wearing cute hats to sweep the floors very thoroughly. Nor did … Read entire article »

Writing and Visiting Day
Back in my study at Church, taking my good friend Zithromax, feeling like I will live. Since I’m on the mend I will be visiting the hospitals later this morning. It’s been really weighing on me that I have several members I haven’t seen in nearly a week. I’m blessed this year that my sermon load is somewhat decreased. Last night we enjoyed the Children’s Christmas program, which meant I was able to sit and enjoy it without even offering a welcome or anything. It was very nice. Simple, well-organized, and plenty of solos by the kids. This Sunday is our annual Choir Cantata, so there will not be a worship service as usual. And I’ve got a pastor to fill in for me January 3 when I will be away … Read entire article »
Field Day Exhaustion
So I spent three hours running an activity at the Hayes Elementary Field Day this morning. It was worse than VBS! I am exhausted. This afternoon are some visits for the sick, straightening the office and then pack, pack, clean, clean in order to leave tomorrow morning for Marjorie’s niece’s wedding in Carbondale, IL. The dog (big, mean and muscular) will be guarding the house. The cat will be giving the evil eye to all passers-by, and we will return Sunday evening, deo volente. Happy Memorial Day! … Read entire article »

Do Not be Swayed by Plastic Hopes
From my friend Emily’s blog: It’s almost Dominic’s birthday but for a couple months already he has been wanting to get a Batman Hideout. It’s the gift he hopes most to get and it’s all he talks about. He hopes so much in getting it that it’s almost like he has it already. He plans on how he’ll play with it and when and with what other toys, ect. Recently he’s been trying to convince us to buy it for him when he’s with us at the store. On those days he wants a toy so much (finally being convinced that we’re not going to get him the big toy) that he even settles into asking for smaller, cheaper toys. Of course we never give in to his pleas for a … Read entire article »
