I started a Facebook page today for the church. The site will advertise events, changes in schedules, announcements, prayer requests and who knows what else. The members that I am Facebook friends with have already received an invite to join or “become a fan of…” For those of you on Facebook who have eluded becoming my “friend” may click on the badge below and click to become a fan. If you have resisted the Facebook impulse, now is the time to join :) Redeemer Lutheran Church | Enid, OK Promote Your Page Too … Read entire article »

Thoughts on Going Tech
During discussion of Romans 5 and the contrast between the First Adam and the Second Adam, one of the members was blown away at the “design” of our salvation. It’s typology, and she was impressed. The discussion continued and I thought of the perfect analogy of God’s “Deep Magic” as C.S. Lewis would call it: the fractal zoom. Here’s what I am talking about (the video goes on for 9 minutes, but you need to watch at least 3-4 minutes to appreciate what is happening): Mandelbrot Fractal Set Trip To e214 HD from teamfresh on Vimeo. I mentioned this and received blank stares. Fair enough. But I wanted desperately to show the class a portion of this. Kind of impossible to do with a chalk board. And I couldn’t explain it in … Read entire article »

Status Update
I suppose it’s that time of year… Everyone at my house has had at least one round of the nasties this year. The kids: H1N1, strep throat, ear infections–one or more each. Mix-and-match to your liking. Marjorie is recovering from the pneumonia and whatever caused it, I’m slowly improving from the sinus infection, and whatever caused it (pneumonia and sinus infections being secondary to whatever else). Liv went down again–imitating me with her own sinus infection. She’s back at school now. I’ve been to the urgent care place last week. Friday I’m off to my primary doc, who’ll check my cholesterol and get a bigger picture of whatever may be still going on. In other news, the computer project at home went swimmingly. At first. The hardware came, I got it assembled in the … Read entire article »

Boring Computer Hardware Post
I’m through with Dell Computers. This time it’s the power supply. Our home computer has taken to shutting down suddenly and without notice every so often. That computer runs Ubuntu most of the time, so it doesn’t freak out about “not shutting down correctly”, but it’s annoying and could eventually cause some data loss. No big deal, right? Just replace the power supply. Amazon and Newegg and, well, every place besides Staples has good deals on power supplies. Just four screws hold it in. Unless you have a Dell. They use proprietary power supplies which either: 1)Has connections which fit but subversively supply different voltages than the standard connections, potentially destroying your components; or 2) Use an additional connection to the motherboard, which if missing, will not allow the computer to work. So your options … Read entire article »

Logos: Strike That
After I wrote last week about using the Logos Bible Software, I found that I was actually dreading doing exegesis for sermons. Logos just wasn’t operating as easily as I hoped it would, and I was having a hard time trying to figure out how to make it work. There were tons of training videos available, but they were condensed into two distinct groups: infantile basic “Bible Study” usages and overly complex morphological analysis that only crazy Seminary Profs and “Bible Scholars” would use. The really essential, mid-level type usages were only vaguely documented in the videos, and that oriented toward doing searches, not actual usage of data. There was no written documentation anywhere. But the Logos-People (who annoyingly pronounce it “law-gaws” on the phone) generously give a 30-day return policy, so … Read entire article »
Switched to Logos
When I was at the seminary I bought Bibleworksto help with translation, exegesis, and Bible study prep. It was a great program and I used it a lot during those years. I upgraded to a new version several years ago, but found I was using it more for just general searches and on the fly translation help–like using a Formula 1 race car to drive a mile to the grocery store. Meanwhile I bought a copy of Luther’s Works on CDROM which used theLibronixLibrary format and did not integrate with Bibleworks. I used it some and realized how useful having one collection of electronic resources would be. So I used some of my professional development money and bought myself a copy of the Logos Oringial Languages collection (at a huge discount from the MSRP … Read entire article »

Don’t Split Yer Coax!
YESTERDAY: We have been having Internet problems at home for the past couple of weeks. Most of the time it worked pretty well, but then we’d have times of limited or no connectivity. To make matters worse, our phone is through Vonage now, so while on phone calls the signal would go in and out. Frustrating. Marjorie had enough today and called the ISP. They sent someone out, but meanwhile, we noticed their trucks at a few intersections a couple of blocks from our house. Suspicious, huh? The man came, ran his tests, went outside to trace the cable and was gone for a while. Finally he came back in and I asked him if there were problems in the neighborhood. He confirmed it, but said we didn’t have any problems except multiple … Read entire article »
Blog Additions Coming Up
I’m planning an expansion of this blog to include more tricks, tips, and how-tos for Ubuntu, as well as Linux, Opensource and tech news. I’m not sure how to implement it exactly without conflicting with the general character and readership of the blog. For now, I’m simply posting them in the appropriate category. I may do a re-design to make the categories more apparent, or make a page linking to a whole ‘nother blog. If you’re interested in freedom from the MicroApple computing monopolies and want a killer operating system that is lightening fast even on old hardware, check out Ubuntu. It just works…. Though for those who are scared of typing a command or two may want to pay your Windows tax or your Mac Coolness Fee and stick with … Read entire article »

For Bloggers and DYI Webmasters
I was talking with Pr. Eric Brown this morning and he mentioned he used Yahoo Hosting. I thought I would share with you what I shared with him (plus some). Yahoo Hosting was a great way for me to start with the Church’s web page. It had a clean interface, basic tools and a nice glossary. But the admin is linked to a Yahoo account, meaning I “owned” the church website, something I didn’t really want. Adding users, password protecting pages, adding .htaccess files (used by WordPress and its plugins a lot) and many other things were difficult or impossible under their terms. I honestly wonder how much they support it too, since not much has changed with the hosting plans and tools in years. Even their automatic WordPress installation is … Read entire article »
