Repenting Is Life Itself

Happy Ash Wednesday to all of you….Er, can you say “happy” Ash Wednesday? Per an earlier post, can you speak of a “good” Lent? Isn’t it all about sadness and mourning and denial and repentance and ashes? Well, no. We should (should, should, should) repent of our sins daily. Hourly, really. Shedding tears over our condition is appropriate even. And we in the Western Church do put ashes on our foreheads this day. We no longer sing “Alleluia,” saving that praise for Easter. And fasting can be hard. Giving up vices and pleasures even harder (at least for a skinny guy like me). But man, it’s not all bad. Jesus says, “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be … Read entire article »

Lent, Fasting, Sloth

I can’t believe Lent begins next week. I was gung-ho for it at the beginning of the month, but the past two weeks have slipped by, and now it’s almost here. And like every year, I don’t feel ready in the least. Ready? Sure, I have sermons to prepare, bulletins to get out and so forth, but that’s not why I feel unprepared. It’s the fast. It is Fastenzeit, after all. Of the fast, it is not the prospect of eating less that bothers me. It is the realization that I will be constantly aware of what I’m eating and how much. It’s the awareness, the watchfulness, the nepsis of it all that has me feeling like it should wait a while. Of course, that is one of the reasons for the fast: … Read entire article »

Covetousness

I’ve been thinking a lot about the desires we have, and how much time we spend in them. We watch television and think about having a house like theirs, a life like hers, a hairstyle, nails, skin, stuff, money, looks, body, wife, husband, children like we see on the glowing screen. We fantasize about the lottery and how we would spend the money–or use the money for good, even. We shop and shop and shop. We plan for different futures and make to-dos for changing the present. I’ve spoken before about the evils of mail-order catalogs and gotten looks of dismay. Catalogs are tools of covetousness, plain and simple. My weaknesses are tool catalogs (Lee Valley is the biggest offender) and Eighth Day Books. … Read entire article »

Fastenzeit is Near

The Lenten fasting season begins in just over two weeks, and I am looking forward to it. Two years ago the vicar and I presented the congregation with the basics of the traditional Western Rite fast. Previously this congregation was used to the idea of “giving up” something for Lent, but wasn’t too aware of the practice of giving up food for Lent. Vicar presented what my friend Fr. Fenton gave for his (then) congregation in Detroit. It was a surprise to many. The next year I worked up a leaflet for the congregation which gives not only the fasting guideline, but also gives some background from Scripture and the Confessions, along with a FAQ and resources published by the LCMS. I heard more of … Read entire article »

No Provision

The Epistle for Advent 1 is Romans 13:11-14, which ends with the words, “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts” (Romans 13:14 NKJV). The Greek uses the word pronoia, which is literally forethought, planning ahead. Thus the English “provision,” that is, to provide for. So the Apostle is urging us to not provide to fulfill the lusts of the flesh. But I fear we often get hung up on the word “lust,” thinking only of sexual matters. The lusts of the flesh certainly include those desires, but also much much more. The desire to have a full belly, to eat are favorite foods, to drink our favorite drinks, to have enough sleep, to be warm … Read entire article »
